There is, perhaps, no greater a symbol of how vibrant a neighbourhood is than the number, and quality, of its floral shops. Evelyn Chan, a former piano teacher, opened Evvie & Olive Floral Design in late 2015 to expand her creative talent for flower arranging.
Located near the corner of Granville and 70th street, Evvie & Olive Floral Design is the perfect place to stop in on the way home from work to gather some freshly-cut flowers, or to place a special custom order for that upcoming anniversary or birthday. Indeed, Marpole has proven to be the perfect place to set up shop. She says, “The people here are very friendly, supportive and we feel very comfortable in the community. We are very lucky to be surrounded by many other successful and warm-hearted businesses like our next door neighbour, Oxygen Yoga.”
Evvie says, “We love to be part of people’s important dates, such anniversaries, birthdays, and weddings. Seeing the glitter of joy on our customers’ faces when they come in and pick up the flowers is priceless.” She offers some suggestions for Marpole residents looking at purchasing plants as part of their spring décor. “Our best selling indoor plants are jade, orchids, and succulents because they are easy and straightforward to care for. Snakeplant is a low-care plant that can even remove toxins from the air.”
Of course, balconies are the perfect place for flower pots, boxes, and even plastic pails. She says, “Pansies are easy to care for and come in different colours.” Home-grown tomatoes, strawberries, and herbs are also popular choices for summertime salads.
