It is hard to imagine when Coquitlam Centre opened its doors in 1979, that it was surrounded by brush and trees with only a few houses nearby. Now, it is at the heart of the Tri-Cities and only a short walk away from Aalto Townhomes. Coquitlam Centre features over 910,000 square feet of retail space including large chains such as Hudson’s Bay, Apple Store, T&T Supermarket, Best Buy, H&M, and Sephora. They also offer in-centre services such as wheelchair and walker loans, free stroller rentals, vehicle jump starts, emergency baby supplies, and a lost and found.
While the mall offers everything that you could want for your shopping needs, it is also a big part of community life in Coquitlam. Here are some other extraordinary facts about this mega mall:
Going Green
With thousands of guests entering its doors everyday, Coquitlam Centre is committed to developing its green initiatives. As of 2008, Coquitlam Centre has implemented a Food Court recycling and organics program, installed Dyson Air Blade hand dryers in all public washrooms, and has establish a “heat recovery project” which helps trap energy inside the building resulting in a reduction of their natural gas consumption. In 2018 they were able to divert 616,000kg of waste from landfills through their recycling program alone – that’s the same weight as 350 cars!
Apart from their own green initiatives, Coquitlam Centre houses a list of retailers with their own recycling programs. Here are a few:
- Electronics Recycling – London Drugs
- Eyewear Recycling/Donations– Image Optometry, Lenscrafters, In-Look Optical and Pearl Vision
- Garment Recycling – H&M
