Metropolis at Metrotown (or just “Metrotown” for short) is your go-to destination if a) you need anything for your wardrobe, home, office or hungry belly or b) the city’s rain has finally driven you indoors.
Burnaby’s Metrotown Centre opened in 1986 on land that was once an old factory for Ford Motors. Flash forward three decades, and through multiple renovations, expansions and amalgamations, Metrotown is now the largest mall in the province. It has an astounding 1.7+ million square feet that holds 400+ shops and restaurants over three levels.
What’s noteworthy here? So much.
Fashionistas rejoice because they can find Aritzia, Zara, The Bay, H&M, Winners, Forever 21 and more, all in one place. Homeowners come here in droves to shop for appliances or knick-knacks, home furnishings and electronics to create the home they’ve been dreaming of. The best part? Visitors never have to leave mid-shop because they’re famished. The food court at Metrotown is the largest in Western Canada, and has everything from curries to cupcakes, dim sum to TeenBurgers.
And for anyone who thinks children and shopping are a disastrous combination, bringing them to Metrotown may change your tune. Let the kids go wild in the giant Toys R Us store just like Tom Hanks did in the movie Big. Help them make a new friend at the Build a Bear Workshop, or take them on a choo-choo ride from one side of the mall to the other. You can even drop off older kids at CHQ Entertainment where new and old-school arcade games keep the tweens busy while you shop.
Metrotown is located at 4700 Kingsway in Burnaby, close to Highway 1 with plenty of parking to make driving here nice and easy. Travelling by transit is also a snap. The mall is on the SkyTrain’s Expo Line with a station right onsite.
