It’s that time of year: eggnog, reindeer, merriment and cheer? Yes all that. But it’s also time to cast your vote for the best-dressed Christmas tree at the Steveston Festival of Trees. Because what is the holiday season if not a tiny bit competitive?

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery smells especially fresh and forest-like during all of December. That’s because it’s packed with trees specially decorated by local merchants as part of a friendly holiday competition. Prefer your tree glittery and modern? Contemporary? Monochromatic or colourful? Lots of garland or none?

These are the factors you’ll weigh as you decide which merchant has outfitted your favourite tree — and then they’ll go home with a prize. (Note: The winning tree is announced on December 16th at the Cannery Farmers Market, so visit early in the season to have your say).

While you’re taking in the displays, there’s a lot more to see and do. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is a National Historic Site, worthy of a tour all its own. If the weather works in your favour, you can even walk along the Steveston waterfront to the Britannia Heritage Shipyard site 15 minutes away.

During the Festival, there are vendors from around the region selling everything from artisanal chocolate and farm-fresh honey (stocking stuffer alert!) to salsas and baked goods. There’s also musical entertainment to serenade you while you shop. And the best part? The whole event takes place indoors so you’ll stay nice and toasty as you experience all this Christmas magic.

The Steveston Festival of Trees happens at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery at 12138 Fourth Avenue in Steveston Village. The Farm Market operates on specific dates — December 2, 9 and 16 — so time your visit accordingly. (Hot Tip: Bring a donation for the Richmond Food Bank to feel that extra Christmas spirit.)
